Race Night

Several LSWC members attended a 'Race Night' at the BSA Social Club on Saturday 15th November when most of us lost a 'cosiderable' amount of money - well some of us lost a squid or two.  Roger did keep saying 'you never see a bookie on a bike'.

Roger, Ann, Andrew (from the BSA Club) and yours truly were on the 'Tote' (selling tickets and handing out winnings).  There were 8 races with 8 horses in each race, bets were 50p a go so loosing your shirt wasn't really in the running, come to think of it, none of my horses were in the running either.  At the end of the eight scheduled races, horses for a ninth race were auctioned off by Ant and good prices were reached.

My biggest gambler on the final race bet £12 on one horse- it didn't win; silly woman!!!  Ah well, I suppose she was just putting back into BSA Club funds what she had won previously.

As with all ‘real’ gamblers, no-one made a loss and all had a good time albeit a little rowdy at times.  Next Race Night and I’ll be at the door selling ‘ear defenders’.

160M CLUB CALLS CONTEST

E-mail Print PDF

What a turnout we had for the 160M Club Calls Contest. Saturday morning and all hands were on board for sorting the antenna for the contest, all hands except mine that is as I had another very important commitment, I was playing golf!

I got to the club by about 1930 and the shack was full; Peter - M0EJL, Gerry- G6KGG, Ian - G4XFC, Les - G1LQB, Bob - G3VRD, Chris - G0PIO, Jeremie - F4ARU, Roger - G3PVU, Darren - G7WAP and yours truly G4STO. (Apologies if I have any callsigns wrong let me know). Like all experienced contesters, Jeremie was calling CQ on 160M so he could keep his frequency to call on when it came to the contest, and Chris was familiarising himself with the logging programme.

NewLink QSL Cards

NewLink is a registered charity teaching disabled adults computer skills to give them the opportunity to get back to work.

I have worked for them in the past voluntarily as an Associate Tutor teaching computer skills in their Lincoln Branch. They are struggling to get finances due to government cuts and I thought it would be a good idea for the Amateur Radio community to help them by buying QSL cards from them.

They have a very good printing workshop in the Lincoln Branch and I have been in talks with them about printing QSL Cards. A very reasonable price list for black print or coloured print can be found here.

More About the NewLink Charity can be found at www.newlink.org.

May I take this opportunity to thank every one who contributed to my surprise 70th birthday celebration at the BSA Social Club on Wednesday 22nd October (one day after my birthday).  Thank you all for the cards and pressies and also to Susan for preparing that wonderful buffet supper.  Thanks too to Pam G4STO, the quiz was challenging and good fun – as was the draw thanks to both Bob G7AVU and James G0EUN.  Carolyn my XYL and me had a most enjoyable evening – it was all very much appreciated.

JOE ROSE MEMORIAL SHIELD - CONSTRUCTION CONTEST

E-mail Print PDF

Have you remembered it’s the CONSTRUCTION CONTEST on Wednesday 19th NOVEMBER?  You don’t have to build an all singing, all dancing, all bands transceiver.  Anything built by you and you feel comfortable with is fine - aerial, keyer, burglar alarm, simple receiver, almost anything can be entered.

Please get your soldering irons out and make the Construction Contest worth carrying on with.
